I am left-handed, and with that comes a responsibility. My upbringing in New Jersey during the 60s was marked by a time when schools conducted atomic bomb drills and societal norms sought to convert left-handed individuals to right-handedness. Reflecting on my experiences, I can recall my first day of fifth grade when the teacher handed out shiny, new, sharp scissors to all the right-handed students. To my dismay, I received a dull pair, with rounded ends. The following day I raised my hand as a right-hander. To my dismay, I still received the dull rounded-end scissors. When I asked her why? She replied, “You raised your left hand.”
